Differentiation Strategies
These strategies are used to meet the varied needs of all learners:

  • for various grade levelsVarying academic levels:  uses whole group participation to allow students to learn from one another
  • for kinesthetic learnersKinesthetic learners:  engages students by having them play a ball rolling multiplication game, allows students to move and interact with one another.

Key Vocabulary

Multiply
Product
Factor

Procedures
Warm-up
  • for various grade levelsAsk students to sit in a circle.
  • for kinesthetic learnersRoll the soccer ball from one student to another, taking turns. When the ball arrives at the student, they multiply the ‘number of the day’ by the number where their right thumb is. Use as a review of factors already learned, and as an introduction of new facts. The ‘number of the day’ can be anything already presented, and changes as students learn new facts.
  • for various grade levelsStudents then call on another student and pass the ball to them. Process continues until all students have had a turn.

Direct Instruction
  • Define vocabulary terms at board.
  • Students write definitions in their journals.
  • Teach each set of multiplication facts using repeated addition, or patterns.
  • Ask students to write each set of multiplication facts in their journals.
            Ex: 3x1=3, 3x2=6, 3x3=9,…3x11=33, 3x12=36.

Practice
  • for various grade levelsGroup students in mixed ability pairs
  • Distribute each pair of students a deck of cards. Write on the board: Jacks= 11, Queens= 12, Aces=1, Kings=0. Students divide their card stacks in half.
  • Each student turns over their top card, and the first person to correctly multiply the two numbers together wins these cards. Object of the game is to end up with more cards than your partner.

Assessment
  • Monitor students’ understanding as they work with their partner to play the game.
  • Students complete worksheet with daily multiplication fact practice.

Closure
  • Repeat warm-up activity.
  • for kinesthetic learnersStudents multiply the numbers on the soccer ball by the new fact of the day.
