Procedures:
Warm-up:
- Read aloud book Oh Say Can You Say What’s the Weather Today? and discuss questions with students as you read.
Direct Instruction:
- Define terms together at board and provide examples of when students may have witnessed each type of weather.
- Write each of the four seasons on chart paper. Ask students to brainstorm what makes each of the seasons special. Write student ideas on the chart paper.
- Share pictures of various types of weather and discuss what students see in each photo.
- Discuss which seasons you would find each type of weather; Add to the seasons chart any new ideas.
Practice
- Shuffle and show weather pictures again and let students retell the weather shown.
Assessment:
- Give students a sheet of paper, and ask them to fold it into six sections. Label each of the sections: sun, rain, snow, lightning, cloud, wind. Ask students to illustrate each of these types of weather, or cut magazine pictures demonstrating each type of weather to glue in each section.
Closure:
- Begin a weather calendar, and chart the weather for today.
