Tell students that the class will play a game called The Real Roman in which each person will try to convince the class (audience) that they are a person from ancient Rome.

Divide the class into these categories of people living in Rome.
- soldier
- merchant
- government official
- homemaker
- school girl
- school boy

Tell students that they will assume the role of a Roman person and will be on a panel that will answer questions about their lives. Each student’s goal is to be the most convincing Roman in their category. Consider offering a suitable reward to the one who wins.

Arrange three or four desks in the front of the room, facing the class.

Call three or four students in a category (e.g., soldier) to sit in the front desks and place their nameplate on the desk.

Introduce the contestants and tell the class that only one of these people is the real Roman.

Allow several students to direct questions to specific contestants. All contestants should have the opportunity to answer at least two questions about themselves.
Assessment

After all contestants in a category have answered questions, have the contestants stand and face away from the audience.

Point to the contestants one-at-a-time and ask the class to answer this question “Is this the real Roman?” by raising their hands.

Announce the winner of the category and call the next group to the front desks.
